Dr. Andy Coates, national spokesperson for Physicians for a National Health Plan (PNHP), will address the current health care crises. He will present: How we have reached the current crises in health care; assess current legislative health reform proposals; the media blackout on single payer/medicare-for-all, and how health care reform is integrating with elections reform. His presentation will be followed by an interactive Q&A session.
"As a college senior, I will be looking for a job next year", says Rachel Williams, Democracy Matters event organizer. " Many of us, as students, are becoming aware of the interconnection of recent economic upheavals. Increased tuitions, lowered scholarships, and difficulties in the job markets are clearly connected to our health care crisis."
"There is much confusion and misunderstanding about bills offered in the House and Senate, as well as the differences between single payer and the public option," says Dr. Coates, a practicing physician and professor of medicine and psychiatry at Albany Medical College. "PNHP will be conducting educational forums much like the one at SUNY throughout New York state in the months ahead."
Dr. Andy Coates will be leading a discussion on how we—(physicians, patients, citizens, wealthy, tax payers, men, poor, women, young, old, voters) can meet the global crisis, and how to resist the worldwide move to privatize, market, and commodify Healthcare.
Andrew D. Coates, MD is a member of the national board of directors of Physicians for a National Health Program and the secretary of the Capital District (NY) chapter of PNHP. He practices medicine in Albany, NY, where he is assistant professor of medicine and psychiatry at Albany Medical College.

ACTION EVENT
September 11, 2009 - Suppport 9/11 Responders
When the towers fell on September 11, 2001, more than 50,000 people responded to the call to action to help with recovery at the World Trade Center. 8 years later, these same heroes feel great betrayal as more are dying from 9/11 related injuries and illnesses without proper health care or financial security.
A recent article in the New York Post cited more than 800 World Trade Center rescue and recovery workers have died since 9/11 -- and cancer has killed at least 270 people (data is still being collected and the number is likely much higher).
9/11 responders have been plagued with respiratory problems, cancer, financial, and emotional problems, while 90% of 9/11 responders dont have proper medical care.
Responders are still being turned down for benefits, despite the mounting evidence that they were exposed to unsafe conditions during the recovery process.
"Many responders and their families and friends feel betrayed by Congress and are appalled by the callous indifference, lack of support and meager financial resources provided by the US government," says Steve Centore, author of One of Them.
As all Americans who face a health care crisis whether insured or not, the 9/11 responders are at higher risk of foreclosures and bankruptcies.
"Once we are unable to work, we lose our health care and so does our family thus placing us into catastrophically financial ruin which no one can return from. If the heroes from 9/11 after saving thousands of lives are placed at the bottom of society and left to die, so can any citizen," says Reggie Cervantes, 9/11 responder featured in Michael Moores film, SiCKO.
We need to remember those who died and those who are dying as a result of contamination at the World Trade Center. The best way to guarantee immediate help to the 9/11 responders and to ensure that no one is ever faced with such neglect after making great sacrifices for this county is to implement a national single-payer health care system. We are all together in the same boat. It shouldnt take devastation on the magnitude of 9/11 to remind us that the only way a health care system can work is if everybody is in, and nobody is left out.

Single payer advocates are welcome too! The radical right is currently winning this with lies and fear. We need big numbers to show that most want meaningful reform, otherwise the insurance companies will win again. I also hope media will be there- If you're for single payer let them know why.

Celebrate Medicare’s 44th Birthday by showing Congress and President Obama the people, unions, doctors, nurses, seniors, faith groups, and Americans of every stripe support a single-payer system.
As President Obama says, “We must build on what works and leave out what
doesn’t.” Medicare has successfully provided care to seniors and people
with disabilities for almost half a century. Medicare is a truly American-made
system that other health care systems around the world have since been
modeled after. With little over 3% administrative overhead, we must look to
this American solution to our health care crisis.
The best way to save this system is to expand it and make it a truly
single-payer system by removing the for-profit interests.
Polls consistently show that the public supports a Medicare for All
system, and 59% of physicians support it. In the face of inadequate reform to our health care system, we want Congress to make sure our voice is heard.
