We discussed the meaning of the election and the impact of UCDW's Election newspaper. We also discussed plans for UCDW's annual holiday party.

In Ulster County, Sheriff Paul Van Blacum and Comptroller Elliott Auerbach won re-election. Judge Wendy Ricks was elected to Saugerties Town Justice and Judge Larry Ball elected to Kingston City Court. Kevin Cahill was re-elected to State Assembly. Congressman Maurice Hinchey withstood a major assault from the right. Our Senators, Kirsten Gillibrand and Chuck Schumer were elected with seeming ease. We have a new Democratic Governor, Attorney General and our old trusty State Comptroller.

As Democrats, we have much to be proud of.

PROTECTING NEW YORK’S DRINKING WATER
Public Officials Join Actor Mark Ruffalo, Residents & Advocates to Urge Moratorium on Gas Drilling Which Could Pollute NYC’s Drinking Water (New York, NY) Gas drilling in New York could contaminate the drinking water of more than 12 million NYC-area residents.

Putting public safety over the interests of gas companies, the Senate Democratic Majority has passed legislation mandating a temporary moratorium on gas drilling (“hydro-fracking”) to ensure adequate time to research safety measures and regulations. However, that legislation also requires passage in the other house before it can be sent to the Governor’s desk for approval.

Urging immediate action on this much-needed moratorium, Senators and other public officials will be joined by actor and Hudson Valley resident Mark Ruffalo (“The Kids Are All Right”, “Shutter Island”), environmental advocates and others who recognize our residents, city and state  cannot afford to rush into drilling.

Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. (D-Queens); Senator Liz Krueger (D-Manhattan); Senator Velmanette Montgomery (D-Brooklyn); Senator Kevin Parker (D-Brooklyn); Senator Bill Perkins (D-Harlem); Senator Diane J. Savino (D-Staten Island ; Senator Daniel Squadron (D-Brooklyn/Manhattan); City Council Speaker Christine Quinn; Mark Ruffalo, Actor, Advocate, Hudson Valley resident; Susan Zimet, Co-Director Frack Action and Ulster County Legislator; Julia Walsh, Co-Director Frack Action; Craig and Julie Sautner, Residents of Dimock, PA where drilling is already underway; National Resource Defense Council; Environmental advocates and concerned residents.

Developed by Halliburton, “Hydraulic Fracturing,” or "fracking," has swept across the United States, opening up new territory in 34 states to extensive drilling, including the Marcellus Shale, a vast formation that underlies most of New York and Pennsylvania, as well as the New York watershed and the Catskills/Poconos. A Q&A with director Josh Fox and Congressman Maurice Hinchey will follow the screening. Visit: www.gaslandthemovie.com.
